Located in the Italian Alps just miles from Switzerland, the IRL Stelvio is an iconic cycling climb famously raced in the Giro d’Italia (read the history of the Giro + Stelvio here). There are three roads up to the summit, with the road from Prato being the most classic and iconic, given its 48 hairpin turns and regular appearance in the Giro.
Zwift’s portal climb covers the segment as ridden from Bormio, which has 27-40 hairpins, depending on how you define a hairpin. This is the route riders will take in stage 16 of the 2024 Giro d’Italia.
Two bits of Stelvio trivia: while some say the Stelvio is part of the famed Dolomites, these mountains are actually located 70km to the east. And this is the second-highest paved pass in the Alps, with the summit perched above the surrounding mountains at 2757 meters!
