It’s very well-made, with a quiet and powerful motor. It also boasts top-quality features for stable connectivity, interaction with Zwift software and Wahoo’s ecosystem, and high max speeds.

But the big feature everyone is excited about is KICKR RUN’s “RunFree Mode”. In this mode, the high-speed motor reacts instantaneously to your position on the running surface, enabling natural and confident pace changes without touching the controls.

The KICKR RUN is a long-term project that Wahoo’s founder Chip Hawkins is passionate about. He says, “I have been working behind the scenes with a very talented group of Wahooligans developing KICKR RUN for over 7 years – so I am delighted to see it come to market. As passionate runners – we wanted to create the most realistic experience and create a tool that helps people improve, become better athletes and achieve their goals. The KICKR RUN will revolutionise indoor running, in the same way that the KICKR did for indoor cycling over a decade ago.

All About Zwift Academy Run 2023 https://zwiftinsider.com/zwift-academy-run-2023/ https://zwiftinsider.com/zwift-academy-run-2023/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2023 16:00:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=92302 Registration is now open for Zwift Academy Run 2023 (sign up here, or in game). Here’s a complete look at this year’s program including workout details, graduation requirements, schedule details, and more!

Intro to Zwift Academy Run

Now in its third year, Zwift Academy Run is an annual event that serves two purposes. First, it’s a global training program for runners of all levels. Secondly, it’s a worldwide talent ID competition to determine the members of this year’s Zwift Academy Run Team (more on that below).

Graduation Requirements

To complete Zwift Academy Run 2023, participants must complete a total of 8 runs:

  • All 7 Zwift Academy Run workouts (group workouts or individual on-demand workouts, your choice)
  • 1 Finish Line Run event

Runners aspiring to the Zwift Academy Run Team have additional requirements – see below for details.

Workout Details

ZA Run workouts can be done in scheduled group events, or you may select the workout from the Zwift Academy Run 2023 folder and complete it as an individual, on-demand activity.

#1: Roller Coaster

This aerobic hill workout, featuring constant elevation change, teaches the art of switching gears. Start the opening intervals close to your current marathon effort and crank the incline as you push your effort toward the top end of your lactate threshold (LT).

What is Lactate Threshold? Also known as Tempo effort, this is a pace you can sustain for longer durations while still moving at a steady clip. Once you hit your LT, you’ll gradually bring the incline down one minute at a time until you’re back at a marathon pace. After a short rest, you do it all over again to finish the session. This workout is great when you’re tight on time and want a solid aerobic run without going to the well.

#2: Interval Kickers

A new twist on an old classic. This workout features three-minute reps starting at your lactate threshold (LT) pace for the first two minutes and then bumping up the speed to “kick” it in gear. Each successive rep will challenge you to push the pace faster than the previous one.

#3: Up & Up & Up

Legs, meet hills. Hills, meet legs. Hill work is speed work disguised! These one-minute repeats will prep you for that final surge to the summit. These hill intervals start with a moderate grade and steadily get steeper. Each repetition gains vert every 20 seconds, so get your low running gears ready to shift into action.

#4: VO2 Inferno

Take advantage of the warm-up for this one. Because as soon as you hit the main set, the speed will feel intense! This workout aims to run through two sets of progressively shorter and faster VO2 reps.

Refresher: VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body uses while exercising as hard as you can. Kick this workout off with the longer intervals first and work your way down to a fast 30-second finish. After a short break to catch your breath, we’ll hit it for one final round. This session will elevate your heart rate and take your speed beyond your goal 5k race pace, so hold on and keep your eyes on the horizon.

#5: Kick Start

Ready to improve your Lactate Threshold (LT) pace? This workout will teach you how to recover on the fly. Today’s session kicks off with a fast effort that should feel faster than your 5k race pace. We’ll bring your heart rate back down over the next few intervals to finish the speed block. Your goal is to be able to complete all of these intervals with minimal rest.

#6: 5k Race Prep

Setting yourself up for success is easy in 5k Race Prep! This workout calls for multiple reps at 2.5 to 3-minute intervals. Alternating reps will be done at your goal 5k race pace before pushing 30 seconds above and below your 5k PR on even intervals. The fluctuation of speed will get you ready for race day.

#7: Down and Dirty Tempo

Fun fact: Tempo runs are the foundation for many great training programs. This workout will keep you going non-stop for a solid block of steady-state work. You’ll start fast, then we’ll play with speed before we end the workout with a cut-down interval. Stay focused on form and work on keeping up your turnover from start to finish.

Finish Line Run

The Finish Line Run is the final event for the 2023 Zwift Academy Run program. The goal? Run as fast as you can for 5k. Every step counts if you’re competing for a spot on the Zwift Run team.

Finish Line events will be available between February 20 and March 5.

Tip: treat this event like a race by giving yourself at least 48-72 hours of recovery before you head to the start line. Show up well-rested and ready to get after it. Good Luck!

Key Dates/Schedule

  • ZA Run in-game registration opens January 23
  • ZA Run begins February 6 at 3pm UTC (8am PT)
  • Makeup events available during the final week of the program (all events of the program will be available this week)
  • ZA Run ends March 5 at 8:59am UTC (1:59am PT)
  • ZA Run Team applications accepted from 100-200 selected participants between March 6, 2023 and April 6, 2023
  • ZA Run Team member announcement (approximate date): May 15, 2023

Unlocks

Runners will unlock new kit as they progress through the program:

  • Run Hat and Socks: 33%
  • Run Kit (shirt and shorts): 66%
  • Run Shoes: 100%

Zwift Academy Run Team Selection

Many ZA Run participants will be aiming for a spot on this year’s ZA Run Team whose goal is to qualify for and compete in 2023 World Marathon Major. Two athletes (one male and one female) will be selected for this year’s Zwift Academy Run team, a reduction from the 6-member teams of past years.

If you’re trying to get onto the Zwift Academy Run Team you must complete all the long run workouts and the 5k Finish Line Run, and a heart rate monitor is required for the Finish Line Run.

What else will Zwift use in order to determine who makes the Zwift Academy Run team? See the full terms and conditions, which includes a detailed “Selection Process/Team Participation” section.

Coaches

The ZA Run coaches are experienced coaches who have trained runners from beginner level all the way up to Olympic athletes.

Terrence Mahon

Coach Terrence Mahon brings total integration of sports science, strength, conditioning, and sports therapy to the ZA Run program. He has guided athletes to the Olympics and incredible results on the global stage by maximizing training sessions to help runners achieve their potential.

Jen Rhines

With 20 years of experience as a pro athlete, 3x Olympian Jen Rhines coaches runners of all ages and ability levels from amateurs to Olympic hopefuls. Last year, she mentored the Zwift Run Team to nail their nutrition and improve their mindset during training.

adidas x Parley Run for the Oceans 2022 Announced https://zwiftinsider.com/rfto-2022/ https://zwiftinsider.com/rfto-2022/#comments Thu, 19 May 2022 18:00:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=85715 Back for another year, Zwift in partnership with adidas and the Parley Ocean School are helping reduce the amount of plastic waste that makes it into one of our key ecosystems – the oceans.

The Mission for runners is now open for registration and runs from May 23-June 8. For every 10 minutes you run, adidas and Parley’s “global cleanup network” will remove the equivalent weight of one plastic bottle (up to 500,000 pounds) from beaches, islands, and coastal communities.

This event also has a “Community Unlock”, which is a really cool idea we haven’t seen before on Zwift. Read below for details!

Getting Registered

In order for your miles to be registered with adidas, you have to link your Zwift run account to the adidas Running app. So before you start, follow these steps to ensure your Zwift run activities count towards the fight to end plastic waste:

  1. Download the adidas Running app and create an account.
  2. Register for the RFTO mission in the adidas Running app
  3. Register for the RFTO mission in Zwift
  4. Connect Zwift and adidas Running app in 3rd party connections.
  5. Run 20km between May 23-June 8 to complete the mission.

Schedule and New Routes!

Once you’re registered, any Zwift runs you do will count toward your mileage goals. But there are special RFTO activities taking place at multiple times each day for the duration of the mission, and all these RFTO activities take place on two new Watopia Run Only routes!

Unlocks with a Community Flair

Run 20km to complete the Mission and unlock sweet in-game gear! Unlocks are progressive:

  • 25% adidas socks
  • 50% adidas Hat
  • 75% adidas RFTO Shorts
  • 100% adidas RFTO shirt
  • 100% Community unlock: this is a fun one! When the Zwift community logs 50,000km, everyone participating will receive adidas Ultraboost 22 shoes in game. According to Zwift, “All registered runners will get notified via email when the community hits each distance milestone.”

About Parley Ocean School

“Inspiring and empowering the next generation of Ocean Guardians” is the mission of the Parley Ocean School. Piloted in the Maldives in 2015, it has since expanded around the globe. To find out more, visit their website.

Zwift Running League Season 3 Announced, Starting November 12 2021 https://zwiftinsider.com/zwift-running-league/ https://zwiftinsider.com/zwift-running-league/#comments Wed, 03 Nov 2021 18:00:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=78968 Our friends at WTRL have just announced season 3 of Zwift Running League which lasts 6 weeks and starts on Friday, November 12, 2021. Here are the details…

Event Types Explained

The Zwift Running League is a team-based running event.  There are two types of events that alternate each week:

  • Points Race: based on the Cross Country format, this is a simple race where the higher you finish, the lower the points you earn.  For example, finish 1st, you get one point.  Your team’s top 3 finishers earn points, and the winning team is the one with the lowest points.  To participate, you’ll need 3-4 runners. Distances for this race vary between 4.4km and 9km.
  • Relay Race: this race requires 3 runners. Everyone waits in the pen at the start, runner 1 starts and runs 2km, once they have completed their distance, runner 2 goes, then finally runner 3. You can’t start your leg until your teammate has finished their leg and any false starts will result in a 20-second penalty. The team’s overall time is calculated when the final runner crosses the finish line. The key to this race is communicating with your team member once you have completed your 2km distance. This can be done in various ways such as using Discord or simply messaging them to say “Start”.

Is this Competitive?

The event is competitive and caters to all abilities, since you only race people near your own abilities.

The way this is done is that you select what “City Class” you enter, based on your running speed.

 ClassAverage Minutes per MILE
based on 3.2 miles
 Average Minutes per KILOMETER
based on 5 kilometers
14:00 – 5:292:30 – 3:25
25:30 – 6:293:26 – 4:02
36:30 – 7:294:03 – 4:39
47:30 -8:444:40- 5:25
58:45- 10:005:26- 6:12

Teams will consist of 3 runners for Team Relay Races and 3 to 4 for the Points Races.  Once you established your Team’s ability, you select the relevant City event category to enter, meaning you are competing against teams of your own level.

The “City Class” you enter is dependent upon the ability of the runners in your team, based on their Class.

CityTeam Make-up
Atlanta3 Runners x Class 1 (but can include other classes)
Helsinki1 Runner x Class 1 – 2/3 x Class 2, 3, 4, 5
Munich1 Runner x Class 2 – 2/3 x Class 3, 4, 5
Rome1 Runner x Class 3 – 2/3 x Class 4, 5
Sydney1 Runner x Class 4 – 2/3 x Class 5

Examples how this works:

  • If you had 3 quick runners that can average 4 to 5.30 minute miles, you enter Atlanta.
  • If your team consists of 1 quick runner of Class 1, but then 2 runners of Class 2, you enter Munich.

Winners

Both individual and team winners will be crowned:

  • Team Results and Leagues (collective/average time, points etc by CITY CLASS)
  • Individual Leagues & Results (times, points etc by AGE GROUP and CLASS)

Important Detail

The league that you join has a designated event time. If you do not compete in that designated event, you will not receive a result.

How to participate

You need to register your team at wtrl.racing/zwift-running-league/#registration

To race, you need to be connected to Zwift, and this can be done with a Smart treadmill.

If you don’t have a Smart treadmill, there are other solutions. You can attach the NPE Runn™ treadmill sensor to almost any treadmill that transmits the belt’s speed in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).  It is available in the Zwift Shop.

If you don’t have a treadmill and still want to participate, one way to do this is via attaching a stride sensor to one of your shoes and run outside, with your device.  The two most economically-priced options that work are:

Running outside with your device comes with risks, so we would advise against this option.  You have to physically check your phone (which must be actively running Zwift) while running, and it is quite challenging. Basically, a treadmill is the best way to participate.

Got Questions?

Check out the WTRL Zwift Duathlon & Running Leagues Facebook group. You can post questions there, or inquire if you’re looking to join a team.
